PORTAGE (WKZO)– A freakish accident on I-94 in Portage has now claimed two lives.
It began early Saturday afternoon when two wheels attached at the axle broke off a westbound tanker trailer, and bounced over the cement wall separating traffic.
Portage Public Safety says that heavy wheel assembly struck a Honda Accord. 67-year-old Rebecca Avery of Glenview Illinois, who was sitting in the back seat of the car, was dead at the scene.
The driver, 34-year-old Michael Ditewig of Chicago was taken to Bronson Methodist where he died on Sunday.
The name of a second passenger has not been released. She is expected to survive her injuries.
The three victims were headed to a wedding in Detroit.
