OTTAWA COUNTY (WKZO)– A huge fire at an industrial park in Ottawa County’s Olive Township destroyed two of the three businesses there.
Ten fire departments had to haul water to the location because sprinkler systems and hydrants at the plant site were broken and had not been fixed for nearly a year.
The fire began in a plastics recycling operation at Trim Polymers, and the resulting plastic fire produced a thick black cloud of smoke that contained traces of cyanide and other toxins blowing over U.S. 131.
Two firefighters required treatment for minor problems.
The fire spread to a company that makes wooden pallets but fire crews and fire walls were able to save most of a third business.
