INGHAM COUNTY (WKZO) — Just days after the first cases of bird flu surfaced in Eastern Michigan, the first cases of West Nile Virus have been found in three dead crows tested in Ingham County.
While the bird flu is only a danger to birds, West Nile is something that can be transmitted from birds to humans by mosquitoes, and can make humans sick.
Jennifer Smith with the Michigan Dept. of Health says cases have been declining as more and more of the population is exposed and builds up resistance.
Symptoms range from no symptoms at all, to mild and flu like to death in a small percentage, and every thing in between.
She says the best way to avoid getting the disease is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. For that you need to stay indoors, and when you can’t or don’t want to…wear a good repellant.
