BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Battle Creek Public School Trustees will meet again this afternoon to consider a red-hot proposal to close elementary schools to cut costs.
Batte Creek Superintendent of School Linda Hicks will once again recommend that LaMora Park and Coburn elementary schools be closed, and their students consolidated at other buildings. While parents say they don’t want to lose the convenience of their neighborhood schools, Dr. Hicks she has to erase a $2.5-million deficit from next year’s budget.
Trustees have spent the last month studying the proposals. A staff committee has an alternative, but it also proposes closing two elementary buildings. The board will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the McQuiston Center and a final vote is expected this evening.
