BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — The two suspects being held in the Craigslist ambush on Linwood Street in Battle Creek could be formally charged with armed robbery at some point Wednesday
Investigators are now saying 42-year-old Jon Vanderwiel of Grand Rapids saw an ad on the website, stating that a vintage Chevrolet Chevelle was for sale, and decided to bring Robert, his 72-year-old father, to Battle Creek. They were carrying thousands in cash to make the buy.
They were lured to the side of an abandoned house in Urbandale, where they were jumped and began fighting back.
Jon Vanderwiel then grabbed his gun and shot two of the suspects. He was licensed to carry the pistol and will not be charged.
A third man, 20-Year-old Jared Wyatt, is being held on a heroin charge, but is also a person of interest in the ambush.
The wounded robbers are said to be in stable condition at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
