COVERT (WKZO-AM) — Van Buren County’s Palisades Nuclear Power Plant is back in operation after spending $58 million to refuel and upgrade the facility in Covert.
Palisades shut down in mid-September after in its turbine generator system failed just days before a scheduled stoppage to make upgrades required by the U.S. government after the Fukijima meltdown in Japan back in 2011.
This week, anti-nuclear activists took their case against Palisades to Kalamazoo, inviting city commissioners to join them in their efforts to shut the reactor, which is one of the oldest in the world.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has now returned Palisades to its highest safety category after the upgrades.
