ALLEGAN (WKZO-AM) — The Republican Party’s Allegan County chairman says the campaign to fill the seat of former state representative Cindy Gamrat could be competitive.
Steve McNeal has established a committee to screen potential candidates. However, he doesn’t want to create divisiveness between county Republicans and county Tea Party chairman Stephen Young.
“I don’t know if there will be a formal process, but, certainly their chairman and I are in contact with each other, and I’m sure we’ll be able to use the input that they have,” McNeal said.
On Facebook, Young compared Gamrat’s ouster to the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
Mary Whiteford of South Haven, who lost to Gamrat in last August’s GOP Primary, has already announced plans to run for the seat in 2016 and may soon be a candidate in the special election.
