KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — An assistant professor at Western Michigan University says more grocery stores are stocking their shelves with healthier foods and snacks.
Dr. Marcel Zondag, who focuses his research on foods and consumer packaging, says millennials are driving trends to eat “safer” and more-local foods.
“There’s a lot of popular culture that looks at GMOs and eating healthy in general, and that is definitely one of the contributing factors,” Zondag said.
And stores on top of that trend are reaping benefits.
“Stores that focus on healthy food, they definitely do a lot better in sales of food than stores who do not,” Zondag said.
But you shouldn’t worry about the extinction of the potato chip just yet. Zondag said more candies and salty snacks are hitting shelves, too.
