KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting says he anticipates the man accused of killing six people during Kalamazoo’s mass-shooting in February will face is 16 felonies at trial in either late 2016 or early 2017.
The attorney for Jason Dalton, 46, is intending to use insanity as a defense at trial and is currently being evaluated at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Saline. Getting said, when that evaluation is complete, a request for a second opinion will be made and likely granted.
“Again, that will slow the process down,” Getting said during an interview Monday morning on WKZO-AM. “We’ve been in constant contact with the victims and they understand what’s going on.”
Dalton, who is charged with six counts of murder and 10 other felonies, was deemed competent to stand trial in April. Police say the Uber driver told detectives he was urged to kill by the ride-share company’s cell phone app.
Getting had initially been anticipating a trial date in either September or October.
