BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Battle Creek police have seized 4.8 pounds of cocaine along Interstate 94 and it all began with a simple traffic stop.
A routine patrol spotted a rental car speeding Tuesday night and pulled it over near the Helmer Road exit. The officers became suspicious because of the nervous behavior of the driver and the fact that the passenger couldn’t find any identification, and the driver couldn’t remember her name.
A search of the vehicle by drug sniffing dogs found the cocaine in three packages in the back seat.
Ryan Lane, 33, who grew up in Battle Creek but currently lives in Texas near the Mexican border, and Jakeyla Haynes, 34, of Albion, have been charged with delivery of over 1,000 grams of cocaine.
Lane also faces two outstanding warrants in Texas and was ordered held on half-million dollars bond. Bond for Haynes was set at $50,000.
Both may also face federal prosecution.
