BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Battle Creek police believe they have found a source of the drugs responsible for a spike in recent overdoses.
They also believe the drug is carfentanyl. That’s the elephant tranquilizer that was blamed for an epidemic of overdoses and deaths in Cincinnati earlier this year. The special investigations unit seized the drugs at a raid at a home at 15 Ridge St. on Friday.
They are waiting on test results from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab to verify the chemical make-up of the powder they seized.
There have been dozens of overdoses and at least two deaths in the past month in the Battle Creek area. EMTs say they have had to apply two to three times the usual amount of Narcan to counteract the overdoses.
One man is in custody following the Friday raid. Investigators say he may have been selling baby formula mixed with the deadly drug and claiming it was heroin.
