BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — A Battle Creek homeless shelter says it had an extremely busy 2015.
Haven of Rest served 80,000 meals to 2,300 of the city’s most-vulnerable residents in its second-busiest year on record.
“One-hundred-fifty people in our shelters every night for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” Daniel Jones, the agency’s fund development coordinator, said. “That does add up pretty quickly.”
Jones said demand for services has not decreased, but also says meal count is down 17 percent.
“Because of some budget constraints in 2015, we went to a outpatient day-only program,” Jones said. “So, we eliminated the residency overnight.”
Jones said donations are 20 percent lower, triggering both service and payroll cuts.
