ALBION (WKZO-AM) — Middle school students from Albion joined their older brothers, sisters and classmates on buses to schools in Marshall on Monday.
High school students in Albion have been making the commute for over a year now, as declining enrollments and financial shortfalls have forced Albion schools to make dramatic cuts. A 25 percent reduction in enrollment and teacher defections forced this mid-year move.
Albions Elementary buildings and its $3 million debt may also be absorbed by Marshall schools if the state approves the annexation.
Marshall and Albion trustees have approved moving forward toward annexation. Voters would have the final say in May.
A plan is currently being developed to let Albion and Marshall voters know what the resulting school district will look lik. It will be presented before the vote is held.
