PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — The Portage City Council will explore passage of an anti-discrimination ordinance protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Township already have such measures on the books. Many of the corporate citizens in Portage also have such policies.
However, the state does not.
Councilman Terry Urban says it should protect the LGBT community against housing and employment discrimination. He also expects more discussion on the issue.
“This is still something that, as far as I’m concerned, we’re not where we should be in this state,” Urban said.
They have requested the city attorney draft a possible ordinance with some additional options that they can discuss for future consideration.
No deadline or timeline was set.
