COVERT (WKZO-AM) — An anti-nuclear group is asking questions about allegations that security guards at the Palisades Power Plant were either skipping or not adequately performing fire inspections.
As a result, 20 officers have reportedly been put on leave.
Kevin Kamps with Beyond Nuclear said fire risk is one of the biggest risks a nuclear plant faces. He thinks the Nuclear Regulatory Commission should take firmer action against the operator, but instead he claims it’s rarely more than a slap on the wrist.
Kamps claims the scandal has created another safety issue: With nearly two-dozen staffers on leave, the remaining security staff is working 70-hour weeks.
The NRC says there is no immediate concern about public safety at the facility in Covert. The owner, Entergy, said they can’t allow employees to fall short on inspections. They’re investigating the allegations.
