KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — They broke ground on “The Foundry” for the second time on Thursday.
The first groundbreaking was 100 years ago, when the building on East Michigan Avenue was erected to house a steel manufacturing operation. After years of little activity, it has been stripped down to its walls and in the warehouse section, right down to it’s steel frame.
The structure will be redeveloped into open office space and a new restaurant.
State Sen. Margaret O’Brien, R-Portage, helped the developers get a traffic light on East Michigan Avenue in front of the building and hopes it will generate more development along the riverfront in Kalamazoo.
They plan to snip the ribbon in 10 months.
The restaurant will be announced in two weeks. The developer is also looking for other tenants.
