KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell says the state has severely restricted what local communities can do to curb gun violence, which means it’s up to state lawmakers to do something about what took place in in the city last month
Hopewell said he will be pressing them to do it. He said he realizes current gun laws and the gun lobby are major obstacles and that a solution won’t be easy, but he said it’s worth pursuing.
Hopewell told the Kalamazoo City Commission on Monday night that legislators enact programs all the time that help put people in housing and remove blight and provide jobs. Those programs all act in a small way to ease community tension and relieve desperation.
He hopes accomplishing those goals would be a good start.
