KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Superintendent of the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency says tension is building among the parents of students after consecutive gun lockdowns at its facility on Croyden Avenue.
A concealed pistol license-holder with a holstered gun has locked down the school the last two Thursdays while attending a sing-a-long program with his child.
“I’ve had multiple conversations with the gentleman,” Supt. Dave Campbell said. “He’s been cooperative, but he knows his rights and is choosing to exercise them.”
Campbell also said the man is not doing anything wrong.
“Michigan law indicates a person with a concealed weapons permit may legally, openly carry a weapon in a school,” Campbell said.
Campbell said the lower-level lockdown restricts movement and prompts a police call-out, but still lets the facility continue its educational operations.
A meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the school. Concerned parents are urged to attend.
