GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO-AM) — Western Michigan University is touting a pilot program set to launch next year that would give disadvantaged high school students interested in healthcare careers an opportunity to gain college credit.
Lisa Brennen with the Western Regional Area Health Education Center in Grand Rapids says 20 students will take part.
“Our healthcare work force — there’s a shortage in primary care,” Brennen said. “So, we want these kids to be exposed to healthcare careers and come in and be excited about studying.”
They’re looking for high-achievers from difficult socioeconomic backgrounds, Brennen said.
“They will come to campus in Kalamazoo and participate in college classes there in the summer between their graduation from high school and their freshman enrollment.”
Participants can earn up to 12 credits, Brennan said.
Those looking for additional information in regard to the program are urged to contact Brennen at (616) 771-9497.
