MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – Enbridge and the Environmental Protection Agency are still negotiating over the fines it will be expected to pay for the 2010 oil spill near Marshall, but they have notified the Securities and Exchange Commission that they may have to pay as much as $55 million.
That’s for dumping 800,000 gallons of Canadian crude into the Kalamazoo River. The total cost of the cleanup is now around $1.2 billion.
Spokesman Ryan Duffy says not included in that figure is all the additional regulation and scrutiny triggered by the man-made disaster.
Line 6-b has been completely rebuilt since the big spill. It also has people questioning the safety of Line 5 under the Straights of Mackinac.
