BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — A plant in Battle Creek is damaged after a fire.
According to a press release, city firefighters were able to bring the fire under control early Saturday. Firefighters arriving at the plant on Fountain Street late Friday could see flames coming from the roof.
Fire officials are blaming the blaze on an oven, which overheated and caused $100,000 damage. Investigators say the flames spread from the oven to a forced air ventilation system, then set the roof on fire.
Firefighters used an aerial truck to attack the flames on the roof, and then went after the concealed fire with hand lines in a process that took nearly three hours because of the heavy steel construction.
The 30 people working inside the plant at the time were all safely evacuated.
The plant also was the scene of equipment fires in October 2014 and March 2015. No injuries were reported in either of those incidents.
