PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — 17-year-old Portage teen has survived a collision with a utility pole but it appears that his Silver Jeep SUV did not.
Fire Rescue personnel and Public Safety officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Zylman road at about 7:30 Saturday evening and found the Jeep upside down and off the roadway.
Investigators are still trying to determine why the young driver lost control of the vehicle, hit the pole and flipped.
Fire personnel were able to get the teen out of the wreck and onto a stretcher.
He reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries. They are investigating.
A Battle Creek man is in critical condition after he was shot once in the lower chest in the 200 block of Cherry Street just before 11:00 Saturday night. Police say it appears the 48-year-old man was standing outside when several shots were heard. One of them hit the victim squarely in the torso. Officers made contact with a 26-year-old Battle Creek man several blocks away and took him into custody as a person of interest for questioning. A firearm was recovered. They are asking for any help from anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or seen anyone leaving the area.
Coldwater police aren’t offering many details but they say a motorcyclist was killed when his bike struck a trailer at about 6:40 Saturday evening. Investigators identify the victim as 26-year-old Kevin Kurtz. They say he was northbound on Snow Prairie Road when he struck the trailer. The driver of the vehicle towing the trailer was not injured. Kurtz was dead at the scene.
