LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Senate has unanimously approved legislation sponsored by Sen. Rick Jones that he claims will keep bad behavior from cops and sheriff’s deputies unhidden by resignations.
The Grand Ledge Republican said he was inspired to put the the bill together after an incident during an Eaton County traffic stop in 2014.
“He then proceeded to assault the man, make a false arrest and make a false police report,” Jones said. “Instead of the sheriff seeking charges against his deputy, he simply let him quietly resign.”
That same officer is currently being sued for a pair of assaults after taking a job three at another department, Jones said.
Jones said he expects the House to also support the bill.
