GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO AM/FM) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down just to the south and east of Grand Rapids, near Alto in Kent County.
The twister took down out trees and a barn, and caused power outages in the area. There were no reports of injuries.
Chris and Roger Blough say it took the roof off the barn and knocked down most of their trees, took out a two story playhouse for their grand children, but left their home and garage untouched.
They found trusses from their barn out on the street.
They say they didn’t get a tornado warning until after it passed.
The heavy storms that accompanied the tornado swept across Michigan to the north of Kalamazoo. A line of heavy rains storms passed through the area yesterday afternoon, extending the time that some parts of the Kalamazoo River basin will be flooded and dropped hail in Parchment.
