LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Lawmakers have approved and the Michigan Department of Transportation will implement new higher speed limits in Michigan.
The higher limits will mostly appear in rural areas and in northern Michigan, and studies show that even the drivers using the roadways are already exceeding the new limit.
Truck drivers may benefit the most. Their limit will jump from 55 to 65, and that gets mixed reaction. The higher limits will go into effect as soon as MDOT can post the new signs, which may take until November.
Limits on 600 miles of highway will increase from 70 to 75 as soon as the signs are posted.
After they are addressed, crews will start putting up 65 mile per hour limit signs on 900 miles of roadway. Work could take until November to complete.
MDOT says they picked roads that are engineered to handle the higher limits.
U.S. 131 north of Grand Rapids will be one road getting the higher limit.
You can get a look at a map of the roads that will get the higher limits right here.
