PORTAGE (WKZO AM/FM) — A teenager who crashed his car into a gas station after bouncing off a gas pump is sitting in the Kalamazoo County Jail this morning, after allegedly wrestling with a Portage Police Officer and trying to escape in her cruiser.
Portage Dispatch received multiple calls about the initial crash and were told when they arrived at the C Station on Centre Avenue that the teenaged driver had taken off, running down Angling Road.
Shortly after, an officer located the 17-year-old who was initially cooperative. Sgt. Aaron Ham says he then became combative and delusional and jumped the officer, and then got behind the wheel of the police car and attempted to flee.
Before he could get away, he was dragged from the front seat and zapped with a Taser. ‘
It took several officers to restrain the suspect and transport him to the hospital for evaluation and drug testing. The teen, from Portage, was then booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail pending arraignment.
None of the officers were seriously injured.
