LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — A grassroots, citizens led effort behind a petition initiative to fight gerrymandering in Michigan has defied the pundits and have nearly completed their drive for signatures.
Voters Not Politicians claims it has 450-thousand signatures and will deliver the 180 boxes it takes to contain all those petitions to the secretary of state’s office on Monday.
Their managed to collect them all and meet their goal two months early with all volunteers.
That is many more signatures than the state requires, just in case.
President Katie Fahey says it’s been a larger undertaking than she originally imagined.
She says they didn’t even have a bank account when they started, now they are compiling donations for what could be a contentious campaign before the election.
