KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Kalamazoo city commissioners approved a resolution Monday supporting the Kalamazoo Public Schools’ fight with Gov. Rick Snyder’s School Reform Office over the possible closure of the Woodward School for Technology and Research and Washington Writers’ Academy.
In fact, a couple of city commissioners suggested they file a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the schools once they file their lawsuit. That was expected to be submitted to the Michigan Court of Claims this week.
They have also approved an endorsement of a proposal to create a county Identification card for residents who can’t get other forms of photo identification. A county-appointed task force is hammering out a proposal for such a program, which could be considered later this spring by the Kalamazoo County Commission.
A number of people spoke in favor of the resolution Monday night. Washtenaw County already has a program in place and operating, and the Kalamazoo ID would be modeled after their local effort.
