WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO-AM) — Michelle Obama’s last public appearance Friday was actually an event to salute Battle Creek Guidance Counselor Terri Tchorzynski, who was named School Counselor of the Year 2017. But most of the coverage it received focused on the fact that it was Mrs. Obama’s last event.
Mrs. Obama read from her Principal’s nomination letter saying once she identifies a problem, she works tirelessly to address it.
Tchorzynski is a counselor at the Calhoun Area Career Center. She was the first speaker at the event saying “I am honored to stand here among you and know that amazing work happens in your building every single day”. She then introduced the First Lady.
The program is part of a much larger campaign called “Reach Higher”, and highlights the work of school counselors in helping students prepare for post-secondary education, whether that’s going to a four-year-college, a vocational program or even the military.
Ms. Tchorzynski spent a good part of last week receiving awards, making appearances and giving media interviews.
