KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo Township Police are replacing their .40-caliber service pistols for 9-mm Semi-automatics, and getting a break on the price by trading in their current guns.
The Kalamazoo Township Board approved the $9,700 deal this week.
Township Manager Dexter Mitchell says they needed new guns and in the long run this may save them money. He says the ammunition for these guns is more plentiful and less expensive.
The FBI recently made a similar move back to the 9-mm guns, which may have smaller bullets, but a gun can carry more bullets in the magazine.
The FBI concluded that the stopping power of a gun depends on where you hit a person, and not how big the bullet is.
They say the 9-mm has less of a kick, making it easier to aim and repeat fire.
The Township will be trading about 40 fourteen to sixteen-year-old handguns for new ones, and getting thousands shaved off the cost in exchange for the trade-in.
