COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch Intermediate School District Board of Education gave their go ahead Wednesday for the district to start classes before Labor Day contingent upon action by the Coldwater, Quincy and Bronson school districts and the Pansophia Academy.
BISD Superintendent Joe Lopez said a common calendar was still being worked on. He expects the calendar to be ready for action during next months meeting.
The Bronson Board of Education approved a pre-Labor Day start last week. It was mentioned during Wednesday’s BISD meeting that the Quincy School Board approved a 2017-18 calendar on Monday night that had a start date of August 22, 2017. No action has been taken yet by the Coldwater Board of Education.
If everyone is not on board with the early start, then classes would start the Tuesday after Labor Day just like in the rest of Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Education recently granted a three year waiver starting with the 2017-2018 school year that would allow the Branch ISD along with the Coldwater, Bronson and Quincy school districts along with Pansophia Academy to start classes before Labor Day.
The waiver would not affect students in the Union City School District since they belong to the Calhoun ISD.
