KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A Battle Creek scam artist who was convicted of stabbing a Kalamazoo woman to death, has had the most serious charges against him either reduced or dismissed by the Michigan Court of Appeals.
35-year-old Christopher Oros was going door to door at the Clayborne Court Apartments, claiming he had locked his keys in his apartment, and was asking people for money to get to work.
Something went terribly wrong when Christopher Oros knocked on the door of 47-year-old Marie McMillan’s apartment just a few days before Thanksgiving in 2014.
He was convicted of first degree and felony murder for stabbing her 29 times and then setting fire to her apartment to cover up the killing.
On Friday, The Michigan Court of appeals reduced the first degree conviction to 2nd degree murder, stating there was no proof of premeditation, and vacated the Felony murder count on a technicality.
Oros will have to be retried to reinstate that felony murder conviction. The Prosecutor may appeal instead.
Oros was serving life without chance of parole. He could get that sentence reduced thanks to this ruling, if it stands.
In the meantime, he will remain in prison, because he was also found guilty of arson and other charges.
