KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Flags are flying at half-staff in Kalamazoo County and around the state for Comstock Fire Chief Ed Switalski, who will be saluted today at a memorial service at Wings Event Center.
Switalski is being remembered widely as a kind and generous man who was dedicated to public service and was actively working to save lives and help the victims of crashes on Interstate 94. Hhe was struck by a motorist who lost control of their vehicle on the freeway a week ago today.
Kalamazoo County Commissioners Mike Seals and Roger Tunier had worked with Switalski on various boards and committees. They described him has a happy-go-lucky guy who touched everyone he came in contact with.
Motorists driving around Kalamazoo this morning may have to exhibit some patience if their path crosses a procession of vehicles and fire trucks participating in the funeral service.
Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas said the procession is going to be something to see. They are estimating between 200 and 300 fire trucks will be participating. But he says it may also create congestion problems for anyone who may have an appointment at Borgess Medical Center mid-morning.
The procession will begin at 9:30 a.m. It will follow Stadium Drive to downtown Kalamazoo, then head out to Comstock following Riverview Drive to Gull Road. It will then loop around the fire stations in Comstock, then head for Wings Event Center.
Doors will open there for anyone who wants to attend the funeral at 10 a.m.
