KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, is speaking out against Trump administration plans to eliminate Great Lakes restoration funding.
Trump reportedly wanted to slash 97 percent of Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding in drafts of his budget.
In the $1.1 trillion outline unveiled Thursday, the remaining $10 million was gone.
“We’ve got a bipartisan effort here to push back and make sure Congress doesn’t pass this,” Stabenow told WKZO-AM/FM on Thursday.
Stabenow sees it as a call to action.
“We’re going to have at least a few weeks now, if not months, to tell the story,” Stabenow said. “We need to have everybody — businesses, farmers, families — speaking up about the importance of the Great Lakes.”
Stabenow claims the move would surrender Lake Michigan to the invasive Asian carp. There would be no federal money to fund efforts to keep them out, Stabenow said.
