KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Western Michigan University has over a thousand international students taking classes in Kalamazoo, but that number may shrink because of the Trump Administration’s attempts to restrict travel.
39% of the nation’s universities say they have already seen a drop in applications.
There are about a million International students nationwide, pumping about $32-billion dollars into the nation’s economy. College degrees are a major export for the U.S.
WMU President John Dunn says the students also contribute a lot while they are here.
Now that may be at risk.
WMU has already announced they plan to cut tuition for non-resident students by 47% beginning with summer term, to make the University more competitive.
International students have been paying at a rate that is more than double the amount paid by in-state students.
