OTTAWA COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — A family from Battle Creek had a more eventful weekend than they planned when a boat ride down the Grand River turned into a search and rescue operation.
43-year-old Anthony Hough was on the river with his wife and 7-month-old child when the boat ran out of gas.
He threw down the anchor near 28th Avenue in Georgetown Township and went to a nearby home, where residents helped him get gas.
When he returned to the river, the boat was gone.
He started walking along the river, thinking he could catch up, but after a few hours, called 911.
The Ottawa County Marine unit, Georgetown Township fire department and the Aeromed helicopter searched in the dark and finally at 3 am yesterday found the mother and child hung up on an island in Allendale Township several miles downstream.
They were fine.
