COMSTOCK (WKZO AM/FM) — The crew of the Comstock Fire Department has dedicated their newest fire truck. Its special because it is a rolling memorial to Fire Chief Ed Switalski, who died in June when he was responding to a report of a crash on I-94.
The new rescue vehicle which Chief Switalski helped design, has been designated Engine 913. It has his name on the side and his obituary permanently sealed into a door panel.
A Battle Creek man was allegedly traveling at 90-miles per hour and distracted by his cell phone when he lost control, hit a cement divider and was thrown into Switalski, who died at the scene.
Driver Brandon Clevenger has been charged with reckless driving causing death and is awaiting trial.
The Legislature has voted to rename that stretch of the highway after Chief Switalski.
