KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Public Safety Officers from Kalamazoo and Portage flooded into Loy Norrix High School during lunch to quell multiple fights and to investigate a report of a gun.
District Spokesman Alex Lee issued this statement: “A fight broke out in the Loy Norrix cafeteria that expanded into several skirmishes. The school went into lockdown at 11:47 a.m. The lockdown was prompted by a student who yelled, “gun!” The police officer who was in the cafeteria at the time and others who responded subsequently found no evidence of a weapon. Pepper spray was used.”
He says the Lockdown was lifted about a half hour after it was initiated.
Public Safety Lt. Matt Huber says about 20 officers responded to the fighting which had spread to other locations in the school. When the students failed to obey commands to stop fighting, they used pepper spray.
Several students received treatment on the scene to recover from the effects of the spray.
There were no injuries but one student was arrested for fighting.
Huber says school surveillance tapes will be reviewed and other students may be charged.
Officers remained at the school until classes were dismissed.
