LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Enbridge is taking a pounding again after its been revealed that not only where there gaps in the protective enamel shielding on Pipeline 5 under the Straits after denying it earlier this year, and not only were they many times larger than the original bandaid size depicted by Enbridge, but we now know there have been gaps since 2014, when repairs were made to pipeline anchors.
Environmental groups pounced, calling Enbridge all sorts of names and demanding that the pipelines be shut down immediately.
DEQ and a number of other State officials say the company owes an apology to the state of Michigan and its people.
Atty. General Bill Schuette says they need to go even further than that.“Trust and transparency are critical in any relationship. This latest revelation by Enbridge means that the faith and trust Michigan has placed in Enbridge has reached an even lower level. Enbridge needs to do more than apologize; Enbridge owes the citizens of Michigan a full and complete explanation of why they failed to truthfully report the status of the pipeline.”
Enbridge spokesman Ryan Duffy says their engineers have known about it but felt it didn’t present any danger to the integrity of the pipeline. He calls it an internal reporting issue.
Duffy also says they regret the miscommunication and will take the strong concern people have about the issue and adjust their communication approach accordingly.
