LAKE TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — Several juveniles were hurt and one of them was killed when a vehicle crashed along I-94 near Stevensville in Berrien County Sunday afternoon.
There were seven in the vehicle headed back to Illinois. 2 of them died from their injuries and the other 5 were hospitalized.
The Baroda-Lake Township Police Department says killed were 13-year-old Osvaldo Leon of Elgin, Illinois and 32-year-old Francisco Valle-Lopez of Mexico.
Investigators say it appears that a re-tread tire on the back of the vehicle appears to have blown out just before 3 pm, sending the vehicle careening out of control.
It closed down the westbound lanes of the Interstate for three hours while officers investigated the crash.
One of the victims was air-lifted to South Bend Memorial and the other four survivors were taken to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. Their conditions have not been released.
