LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The Lt. Governor has been pushing a plan to make Michigan’s Legislators work part time. A lawmaker with a far more radical plan convinced Republican leaders to give him a committee hearing Wednesday.
Representative Jeff Yaroch of Manistee proposed a constitutional amendment to make the legislature unicameral and bi-partisan.
In other words, he would jettison the State Senate and banish political parties, which he says would result in a smaller and simpler government.
He says it would also be a much more transparent Government and would make it easier for taxpayers to follow bills through the legislature.
The House Government Operations Committee scheduled the hearing.
Nebraska has had such a system since 1934, but critics of the plan say Nebraska has a much smaller and less diverse population.
They say in an ever more complicated world dealing with new technologies and new challenges, a simpler government would not be up to the job.
