KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s now up to a Kalamazoo County Jury to decide the fate of a Portage man. They have been asked to not only determine if he is guilty, but whether he is guilty of premeditated murder or a lesser offense.
Thursday Kalamazoo Detective Joseph Paul testified that Zachary Patten confessed to him that he had been gunning for Oscar Portillo, the man who had dated his current girlfriend for 15-years and had two children by him during their relationship.
He hit and killed his sister, Graciela Portillo-Esparza, when she stepped into the path of his bullet.
The prosecution claims the regardless of who was shot, the crime was premeditated. The defense claims otherwise.
