JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – A Branch County Sheriff’s Department deputy escaped serious injury Monday morning near Jackson when a piece of debris came off a truck and struck his vehicle before it went through the windshield.
The Sheriff’s Department says the incident happened at about 8:15 a.m. on I-94 near Airport Road.
Deputy Roy Shutts had just transported a prisoner to the Jackson State Prison. On his way back to Branch County, he was traveling west on the interstate when a semi-truck traveling in front of him lost some of its load.
The items being hauled were metal. A piece of the debris fell off the truck and struck the patrol unit’s hood before going through the windshield and coming within inches striking Shutts.
It went into the dash of the patrol unit.
Shutts was not injured but he was covered in glass from the windshield.
The accident was investigated by the Blackman Township Police Department. They were assisted by the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division.
