KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Today, Tuesday the 20th of February, is the anniversary of Kalamazoo’s mass killing, the night that police say Jason Dalton went on his killing spree in between delivering rides to customers for Uber.
Dalton claims the same cell phone app that directed him to pick up riders was also directing him to kill and he plans to plead insanity. Eight people were shot and six died. Four were from Battle Creek and two from Mattawan died.
Monday night at their regular meeting, City Commissioner Eric Cunningham paid tribute to the survivors who both continue their slow recoveries, calling them “sheroes”.
Commissioner Don Cooney hopes that the recent shootings in Florida will be the act of madness that brings lawmakers to see reason and back gun control.
Several commissioners applauded the effort of students at Kalamazoo Central who have started an online petition which is nearing 75,000 signatures, urging Congressman Fred Upton to act on gun restrictions. .
An appeal in a pre-trial motion is pending before the State Supreme Court, holding up Dalton’s trial.
