THREE RIVERS (WKZO AM/FM) — While Kalamazoo could see record flooding this weekend some area communities are already there. Three Rivers is flooding as officials there say they are seeing some of the highest water they have seen in decades.
40 homes and apartments along River Street, River Drive, and Middle Street have had their water and gas shut off and the homes evacuated.
A shelter opened on Douglas Avenue in Three Rivers last night. And it’s the same downstream. A lot of that water is headed down the St. Joseph River to Berrien County, where Undersheriff Chuck Heit says they are mobilizing the marine patrol to make evacuations and rescue runs.
He says residents along the St. Joseph should prepare a bag with three days of food and water and other essentials just in case they have to evacuate in a hurry.
A Red Cross shelter has opened in Hastings at the Commission on Aging for the victims of the flooding in that community.
Sheriff Dar Leaf is making the same warning that most area officials are making to drivers, and that’s not safe to drive into flooded streets.
Leaf says he has never seen flooding this bad in the county.
