PAW PAW (WKZO AM/FM) — That notorious stretch of I-94 between Kalamazoo and Benton Harbor that has been the scene of so many crashes during this cold spell claimed A Coloma Police Car Wednesday and it may get much worse over the next 36 hours.
Winds out of the north will set up bands that will pound Allegan, Van Buren and Berrien County with Lake Effect Snow through Friday.
Forecasters say, they could see 12 to 18 inches of new snow on the highway, causing white-outs, slippery conditions and the potential for more pileups.
MDOT’s Nick Schirripa says a study triggered by that record breaking pile-up in Kalamazoo County a few years ago, shows that stretch of roadway is a magnet for bad weather because of its geography and its topography.
State Police Lt. Dale Hinz says drivers do not slow down enough when bad weather sets in.
If you are heading west you might want to take Red Arrow Highway for the next few days.
Traffic will likely be detoured onto that route anyway.
