COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater City Police say there was a beating and strong armed robbery at a motel on the city’s east side over the weekend. The incident allegedly happened around 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning but wasn’t reported to authorities until 24 hours later when officers said the victim went to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The 21-year old Kalamazoo man said the crime occurred in a room at the Coldwater Inn and Suites, the former Super 8 Motel at 600 Orleans Boulevard, where police have made a number of arrests of suspected drug dealers on several occasions in recent months.
Police said according to witnesses in the room, the victim was punched in the face and ribs when his hands and feet were zip tied together, after which the Nike tennis shoes he was wearing were stolen. He was treated and released from ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
Officers said the main suspect in the case remains at large and is a 25-year old Coldwater man known to police. A 25-year old Chicago man was booked early today at the Branch County jail on a preliminary charge of being an accessary to the crime.
Police said alcohol was involved in the incident. They also said they will seek charges of aggravated assault and larceny from a person against the prime suspect in the case.
