ALAMO TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Union City man was killed while his nine-year-old passenger is said to be in serious condition with a severe concussion after a rollover crash in Kalamazoo County on Sunday afternoon.
Michigan State Police said in a statement released Monday that 29-year-old Derick Alan Smith died from his injuries a couple of hours after the accident which happened on U.S. 131 near D Avenue.
Troopers say Smith’s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit according to a preliminary blood alcohol test.
Witnesses claim that the driver was speeding, swerving in and out of traffic, and passing other motorists on the shoulders, when he hit loose gravel and lost control.
The vehicle rolled multiple times and into a ditch where the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car and the passenger was still trapped inside.
Good Samaritans stopped to help the victims. Michigan State Police are still investigating the crash.
