COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Novi, Michigan man who was accused of being drunk at the time his mini-van crashed in Girard Township May 26 with his two children inside entered into a plea agreement with the Branch County Prosecutors Office Tuesday during his preliminary exam in District Court.
A court spokesperson says 32-year-old Chad Hewitt entered no contest pleas to two counts of operating while intoxicated with an occupant under the age of 16, child endangerment, first offense. Since it is a first offense, this type of charge in Michigan is a misdemeanor.
Three other charges will be dismissed by prosecutors in exchange for Hewitt’s no contest pleas.
Among the charges being dropped was a third time offense for having a high blood alcohol content.
The other dropped charges were failure to stop for a personal injury accident as well as a second offense for having a suspended or revoked license.
Hewitt was ordered held without bond pending his August 27, 2018 sentencing hearing.
The accident was reported by a passing motorist on East County Line Road at Hadlock Road south of Tekonsha.
