CENTREVILLE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The St. Joseph County Dispatch center was flooded with calls from residents who reported they were contacted by phone by a bogus IRS Agent claiming that if they did not immediately pay some fictional amount in back taxes that they would be arrested immediately.
That seems to be the pattern for this popular scam.
Their phone bank will focus on one area code for a short period and then move on.
It was apparently their turn.
As more and more people have learned that this is not how any government agency operates, rather than get cheated they get angry and dial 911.
More often than not, the scam artists are operating from someplace well beyond the jurisdiction of the local county sheriff, the Michigan State Police or even the FBI, and there isn’t a lot any of them can do, but issue warnings that if you truly owe money, they won’t be coming at you over the phone.
